Why I Still Own a 35mm Camera

Don’t get me wrong—I love my digital camera. It’s out on my kitchen counter where I can grab it to take a few shots of the kids. So why don’t I just toss my old film camera? Because film lasts. Every once in a while I pull it out of its drawer and snap a couple of photos of my kids as they grow up. That way no matter if my computer crashes, my CD/DVDs deteriorate, or my photo files become obsolete, I still have a couple of photos of my kids when they were babies.

Thanks to film we have photos dating back to the early 1800s. It used to be that photographers could expect their negatives to last decades or even longer if stored properly. Unfortunately digital images don’t have the same track record. CDs and DVDs only last two to five years. Hard-drives can be temperamental and often wear out. And then you have to worry about whether your photo files will even be supported by software five to ten years from now. Unfortunately there is still no easy, long-lasting way to archive digital photography.

You can have prints made, but they don’t last as long as negatives. Printing your photos out on your desktop printer is almost useless. Those prints may only last a few months if exposed to lots of direct light.

One of my favorite photos is of my great, great grandpa in front of a horse. It was a totally different time, and I am so glad I get this little glimpse into the past. Digital photography has become so easy, that I am afraid that we have taken it for granted. I fear that years from now we will realize that we did nothing to preserve it.

When you use black and white photography, you know that it will last like nothing else out there. It is the perfect way to archive your memories. So if you want to protect your photographs, load up your old 35mm camera with some professional black & white film.

Personal Audio Systems Aren’t What They Used to Be

…And that’s a very good thing! I don’t know too many people who miss their bulky home audio system or the joys of hauling around an 18” boom box on trips to the beach. My pocket-sized MP3 player definitely makes me thankful for how far personal audio systems have come over the years.

And not only have the audio players become cooler, so have the accessories! Here are a couple of audio accessories that will make you wonder how you ever lived without them.

Docking stations: MP3 docking stations let you turn your small, little MP3 player into a booming home stereo system. It sure beats all the hefty and expensive components you used to have to buy. They are also super convenient. Instead of having to mess with a bunch of wires, you just set your MP3 player into the cradle of the docking station and you are ready to go. Most docking stations will allow you to recharge your MP3 player and play music at the same time. They also typically provide better sound than your average plug-in portable speakers. Portable Speakers: While they can’t rival the sound of your average docking station, portable MP3 speakers are a great way to take your music with you. When headphones won’t do, travel speakers can let you share your music without carrying around a lot of bulky speakers and loose wires. Today, most portable speakers can fit in your pocket and are designed to run off very little energy. And for such a tiny package, the quality of music they can put out will surprise you. They are perfect for the beach, parks, hotel rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and kids’ rooms.

Headphones: Back in the day headphones came in black and covered 80 percent of your head. Now they are small enough to slip into your pocket and come in more colors and designs than a box of Crayolas. Today’s headphones can provide deep, rich sound despite their small size—making it even easier to enjoy top quality music anywhere.

But if you miss the crackle of the airwaves or need something that can get beat up without you worrying about it, then a simple, inexpensive portable radio may be all you need.

Kudos to the Disposable Camera!

During my last vacation I became a big fan of the disposable camera. Whatever you call them—disposable cameras, single use cameras, ready to use cameras—they all have advantages for today’s photographer, whether beginner or enthusiast. Let’s look at some of the reasons why:
